Magnesium occurs as a free cation Mg2+ in aqueous solutions or bound as part of a variety of compounds, including citrates, carbonates and hydroxides. Magnesium is the eighth common element in the earths’ crust, embedded in various forms such as carbonates and sulfates. A big Magnesium reservoir is sea water where about 17% of the dissolved salts are Magnesium compounds.
Magnesium is an essential Mineral. Without this vital element, no living cell can fulfill its diverse physiological functions. The multifaceted functioning of magnesium's physiology and chemistry are only beginning to be fully understood. It is involved in several hundred enzymatic reactions in the body, is a vital constituent of bones and teeth, and is essential for the transmission of impulses in the nerves. Although Magnesium has long been the object of research, new aspects of its spectrum of action are constantly being discovered, such as its role in the treatment of depression or its long underestimated importance for bone health at an advanced age.
A diet sufficiently rich in Magnesium is therefore of particular importance. In pharmaceutial applications our Magnesium Salts are used in infusion solutions, as antacids or laxatives. In the production of tablets, Magnesium based excipients are used as anti-caking agents, glidants and carriers. As a manufacturer of numerous pharmaceutical grades, we also produce Magnesium Salts to customer specifications.
Magnesium Salts are also often used in cosmetic applications as excipients, such as bulking agent or to regulate viscosity.
In the production of Magnesium Salts for industrial applications we are able to vary numerous physical parameters, such as bulk density or particle size. For example, our magnesium products are used to set the antistatic properties of polyester films optimally, in chemical synthesis as an auxiliary for desiccating solvents and organic peroxides, with optimized properties as modifier for catalyst surfaces, or as a free-flowing additive in solids. We are proud that our Magnesium Salts have also found their way into space as a component of telescope mirrors for the Hubble telescope.

For the production of several of our Magnesium Salts, we use raw materials, which are directly coming from nature. Our raw material supplier is committed to environmentally-sound mining, focusing on maintaining the natural environment as close as possible to its pre-mining state. Extensive land restoration and reforestation with olive trees is carried out to bring the mining area back into line with the original landscape and to restore its full potential. At the production site of Dr. Paul Lohmann®, the natural Magnesium raw material is extensively purified and acts as starting material in strictly water based synthesis processes.
