Hyperphosphatemia can be a complication in chronic kidney diseases and is also associated with conditions such as end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and hemodialysis. A balanced phosphate level of these patients is essential because high phosphate level can lead to cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and stroke or problems with bone health as osteoporosis.
Calcium acts as phosphate binder to treat hyperphosphatemia by binding to dietry phosphate in the gastro-intestinal tract, preventing the absorption and decreasing the phosphate level in the bloodstream.
