New research shows that iron supplementation has a beneficial effect on the intelligence scores in children and adolescents from low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, the effect on intelligence was shown to increase with higher doses of Iron supplementation.
The study – a systematic review and meta-analysis – was conducted by analysing a range of profound studies, examining an impact of iron supplementation on cognition. From the nine studies including 1196 children and adolescents, it was found that Iron not only had a positive impact on scores of intelligence, iron supplementation also was found to improve this intelligence score in both anaemic and non-anaemic persons.
The noted findings of this study are consistent with previous studies demonstrating the effects of iron supplementation on intelligence. Once again it was shown that a sufficient Iron intake – especially throughout childhood and adolescence, as the bodies are not able to increase iron reserves and increased demands – is vital to prevent deficiencies.
Iron supplements can help increase the levels of iron in the body, which promotes the production of healthy red blood cells and the delivery of oxygen to body tissues. In turn, this can improve cognitive function and relieve symptoms such as fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Iron supplementation is widely recommended for the treatment of anaemia.
